Greater New York 2026 returns with 53 artists and free entry

Greater New York 2026, the sixth edition of MoMA PS1's survey of New York-area artists, opens on April 16, 2026 with 53 artists and collectives showing more than 150 works through August 17. Per the museum's April 2, 2026 announcement, the edition marks the institution's 50th anniversary and is the first organized by its entire curatorial team.

The organizing group pairs Connie Butler, the museum's Agnes Gund Director, and Ruba Katrib, its chief curator and director of curatorial affairs, with associate curators Jody Graf and Elena Ketelsen González, assistant curator Kari Rittenbach, curatorial assistant Sheldon Gooch and curatorial coordinator Andrea Sánchez — the first time the survey has been assembled by the full curatorial staff rather than a small group of named curators.

Entry will cost nothing. MoMA PS1 has been free to all visitors since January 1, 2026, under the three-year gift from the collector Sonya Yu, which the museum says makes it the largest free museum in New York City — making this the first Greater New York without a ticket price.

Greater New York was first staged in 2000 and has returned at irregular intervals since. This edition spreads more than 150 works through the former public school building's galleries, with the anniversary giving the curators the widest brief in the survey's history.

For the city's art public, the survey remains the most complete census of who is making art across the five boroughs, and its anniversary edition doubles as a free introduction to it. The context worth adding: from April 16 the city will run two simultaneous surveys of its own art ecology on opposite sides of the East River — Greater New York in Long Island City through August 17, and the Whitney Biennial 2026 in Manhattan through August 23 — an unusually long window in which New York's artists are the subject of both of the city's institutional mirrors at once.
